Self-Portraits

Elaine de Kooning’s 1946 oil on masonite, Self-Portrait #3 (courtesy the Elaine de Kooning Trust, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution).

In the image of Elaine de Kooning’s painting, we have a smocked woman sitting on a cushioned chair. Open book in her lap, legs crossed, coffee mug and ashtray on the floor underneath her. What else do you notice? Does this image stir within you a story?

In Jackson’s poem below, the speaker asks a series of questions, and ultimately, the notion of absence is considered. Given the ekphrastic conventions listed earlier (for instance, addressing the artwork, dictating what the artwork says, writing an interpretation of the artwork, or meditating on the moment of viewing), which one or ones are evident in this poem?
